INTEGRATED TRAFFIC CONTROL CENTRE, MIDDELBURG

The Eastern Cape Freight Strategy (2014) has set, as a Strategic Intervention, the identification of sites and the construction of traffic control centres in the Province.

The Middelburg Integrated Traffic Control Centre (ITCC) has been identified along with two others: N2 West of Port Elizabeth, and N6 south of Queenstown. The Eastern Cape Department of Transport (ECDoT) has decided to proceed with the Middleburg ITCC.

The site identified is a portion of land to the north of the town of Middelburg EC, west of and abutting the N9/N10 national road. The ITCC will integrate with services on the site such as Traffic Police, SAPS and emergency services.

Middelburg is a town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The proposed ITCC is located near the intersection of N9 and Meintjies Street.

LUSIKISIKI HOME AFFAIRS

Project name: Lusikisiki Department of Home Affairs

There were eight existing structures that had to be removed. Since they were older than 60 years, a heritage application had to be done to get the required permission. The proposed public building (± 850 m2) is a barrel vaulted structural steel frame comprising of large open double volume spaces and large windows providing for open viewing between public and administrative staff. The administration building (± 1000 m2) is a reinforced concrete framed double structure connected to the Public Building.

Andrew & Arinda became involved in this project while they lived in Port St Johns in 2006. They have always had a passion for the people in the rural areas of South Africa and believed they are entitled to the best design – public buildings to be proud of. This project was finally built and handed over to the people in 2021.

GRAHAMSTOWN SAPS

Mfesane Senior Secondary School (taken over from Richter Architects)

This project is funded by the Department of Education and implemented by Department of Public Works.

The original architect and principal agent resigned from this project. BNM Architects were appointed as new principal agents and architects to complete the duties for the remainder of the project.

The project involves the construction of new classrooms, administration block, kitchen and covered dining area, sports fields, new ablution facilities, parking and an elevated bulk water tower.

KWAZAKHELE SAPS

Project name: Kwazakhele SAPS: Condition Based Maintenance

Client: National Department of Public Works

This project involves Repairs and Maintenance to the existing SAPS Kwazakhele. The complex consists of several buildings, including an office block, cell block and customer service department. Scope of work involves general refurbishment, provision of new lift and other adaptions to ensure compliance with NBR, with specific reference to Inclusive Design. General site works. Site handover took place in December 2019 but work was suspended shortly afterwards due to legal issues.

FIVE POLICE STATIONS

Revitalisation and routine maintenance of five SAPS:

Ntabankulu, Bityi, Elliotdale, Dutywa and Tsolo

This project involved Repairs and Maintenance to five different Police Stations, spread across the Eastern Cape. The contracts were primarily for routine maintenance, ensuring compliance with Project 5-Star for the Cell blocks and making sure that these public buildings are accessible to both staff and the public – this included the provision of ramps and assisted bathrooms.

The stations typically consists of several buildings, including an office block, cell block and customer service department and staff accommodation. The contracts were undertaken by five separate contractors.
