To date, 14 months have elapsed on this 48-month project. The pharmacy, one of the first buildings under construction, has reached 40% completion.
The platforms for the Male and Female Wards, as well as the new Staff Accommodation, are currently underway, with the construction of the raft foundations set to follow.
Madwaleni – meaning “built on rock” – continues to live up to its name. Controlled blasting is being undertaken in small sections to safeguard adjacent structures. With the main platform now 50% complete, progress is expected to accelerate once the rock has been fully cleared.
Fun fact: Dolerite (The rock discovered on site) is a medium-grained, mafic (dark-colored) igneous rock, similar to basalt but formed as an intrusion (rather than extruding as lava). It is commonly found in dikes and sills, and is also known as diabase in some regions. Dolerite is known for its strength and durability, making it a useful material in construction and road building.
The rock we are currently blasting will be crushed and used for platforms and roadways.
Project description:
BNM was appointed in 2005 as Principal Agent and architects for the upgrading of Madwaleni Hospital since 2005 (architectural appointment shared with Mpande Architects).
There are currently 58 buildings on the site with a number of temporary structures. According to the suitability and condition assessments contained in the status report, dated 22 August 2005, a large number of these buildings do not comply with design guidelines. Certain buildings are also structurally unsound and therefore partial or complete replacement is recommended as indicated below.
DPWI as implementing agent for ECDOH appointed the Professional Team for the design of a new 134 bed hospital including infrastructure services and buildings, support services and Staff Accommodation in terms of a project brief developed by the ECDOH Revitalization team.

The BNM Consortium was awarded the tender for the Infrastructure Improvements, Alterations and Additions at Kwazekhele CHC in January 2023.
The existing buildings were erected in the early 1970s as a temporary solution in providing health services to the local community. As time passed, new services could not be accommodated within the existing confines of the site and building infrastructure which necessitated these services to be located elsewhere in other ECDOH building. Our appointment is for design of a new CHC on the existing site which will accommodate all services.
There are three phases to the project, the first which will include the upgrade of the existing boundary wall, security, gatehouse and emergency repairs to the existing buildings and related services. This phase has been awarded and site hand over is imminent.

This tender was recently awarded, and site handover is scheduled for August 2025. An existing building (the old OPD building in the old part of the hospital) was identified as suitable for upgrading for this purpose. The layout of the proposed space is quite well-suited to the CP Rehab function due to the nature of the rooms and the wide corridors. As stated above, the space was previously used as an OPD and has numerous consulting spaces, waiting areas and ablutions for patients and staff alike. However, the internal layout will be modified to suite the new requirements for treating patients with CP and be compliant with current norms and standards. The existing Block H will also be renovated in order to accommodate Ophthalmology Services. Block H was established as a donation by a consortium led by Siemens to increase bed capacity for the admission of Covid-19 positive patients. It was utilized in 2021. Following the drop in patients requiring admission, hospital management identified Block H to be suitable to be repurposed for the Ophthalmology Department at CMH.

This tender was recently awarded, and site handover is scheduled for August 2025. The scope of work includes: demolition of existing prefabricated buildings, tree trimming and site clearance, replacement of the existing asbestos roof of the Sanford building, and other minor works.
This was a very unique project:
The Department of Health identified 12 Clinics which were in need of additional consultation spaces. Many of these clinics are in very remote areas and difficult to access. A contract was put out to tender for the supply and erection of prefabricated units to could be accommodated on existing sites. The contract was awarded to one contractor to do all twelve – all in a similar fashion, with only the site works differing from one site to the next, depending on the topography. Combined value of the contracts was approximately R35m
